Day 36 & 37 – Kicks and Signs

April 19th, 2020

Happy weekend! Do weekends matter anymore? I mean, there’s less online programming from us so… YES WEEKENDS matter. Now, choose. You want to kick with us, or sing with us?

If you missed the live show, you could do some kicks with Lara and I in our striking video.

Or, if you want to sing with Lara and I, you could join us for our baby sign class.

Day 35 – Difficulty Rating

April 17th, 2020

Is there anyone out there who wants to volunteer to do all the video workouts we’re making and come up with a difficulty rating for them? Because that’d be awesome. I’ll buy you a bag of bagels if you do it (cream cheese not provided.)

For kid’s class today, we worked head movement. What is that? Well, for us it meant throwing tiny puppets at one another with our eyes closed… but usually it means keeping your head moving so you are less likely to get hit in sparring. I think our version is more fun.

Partners? We don’t need no partners! Okay, maybe we do but in the meantime, you should do the internal martial arts video.

So I’ve been doing a few minutes of kicks every morning when I wake up and unsurprisingly, it has led me down some amusing roads. Check out this striking video on some simple ideas to play with while you work your front kick.

Concluding this week of triangle fun, for the at home grappling, today my new friend Jimmy and I go over the arm triangle from side mount.

Want more ways to connect kata to your practice? Try going through the form and naming all the techniques you’re doing. Are they basics? Are they variations on a basic?

Day 34: Sharpening New and Old Skills

April 16th, 2020

I hope y’all are enjoying the skills in the CrossFit videos. I’ve picked a few to work on during this Covid excitement that I’m a total beginner at. And, of course, the nice part about being a beginner is that you make a lot of progress. The rough part is you’re really lousy at it.

Are you missing sparring? I’m missing sparring. I’m sure anyone who was going to sparring class is missing sparring. Well, whatever, even if you aren’t missing sparring, watch Dug’s class and keep your kicks and punches from getting rusty.

What skill did we work in kid’s class? A new one or and old one? Both. In the same technique! We worked a Judo throw called Tomoe Nage (which we like to call the Captain Kirk throw because… well, just go watch an old Star Trek episode where Kirk throws some poor alien) which has a skill we’ve touched on several times in our online classes – the back roll – but it adds the crazy twist of throwing someone over your head as you do so.

For the grappling video, I choke my new dummy (literally) of a partner with an arm triangle. Join me. It’s triangle week here.

And the kata video? I update you on my creative form progress. Why am I making up a form? Why wouldn’t I?

Day 33: Hook Kicks!

April 15th, 2020

I mean, not every video had hook kicks in it today, but two of them did – so let’s run with it. Kid’s class today featured the “animal crossing game” in addition to hook kicks. What is the “animal crossing game”? Watch and find out!

And the second hook kick video is just me… breaking down the hook kick because it has always been a tough one for me. See if the steps I lay out help you learn the kick, or if you already knew it, see if the video helps you gain some new insight into the kick.

Grappling class had nothing to do with hook kicks and everything to do with ankle picks. Go watch and wrestle with Dave and his cat!

The CrossFit class included zero hook kicks but lots of L-sits, which are pretty much the most fun ab workout ever because no normal human can do them for longer than like 15 seconds anyway.

And finally, there were also zero hook kicks in the kata video. Instead, I suggest and demonstrate how you can work on getting the “right” amount of extension in your form. That’s right, the word “right” is in quotes.

Day 32: Silly Technology, Workouts are for People

April 14th, 2020

Well, I forgot to clear out the memory in my phone so today’s CrossFit workout cut out 5 minutes before the end… but it was just some stretches. But darnit! I was trying to get more stretches in our workouts. So it goes. Gotta remember to clear the phone every time.

Dug went over some of my favorite fakes today in striking. The old backfist/ridgehand switcheroo. If you don’t know it, you should do the class. And heck, even if you do know it, you should do the class.

For kids class today, we showed how to reverse the vicious side control of a stuffed penguin. As always, it was a hoot.

Got a moment for at home grappling practice? Grab a pillow and practice your triangle from top side control. Better yet, grab a giant stuffed animal and do it. Best, grab your grappling dummy that you’ve made because you desperately miss having real partners…

Feel the power of jumping kata! Well, maybe not. But perhaps you will feel where your power is supposed to be coming from if you DO jump in your kata.
