Day 60: More Spitballing

May 13th, 2020

We’ve been thinking more about what classes will look like when we open up and we’ve brought the coaches into the discussion as well. Pretty soon, we’ll be able to share some stuff with everyone and, of course, we’ll ask for student’s input as well.

But, now back to our regular listing of the online classes of the day.

First off, kid’s class was purrfect. That’s right. We did a cat themed kid’s class. I mean before this is all over we’ll probably clock about 80 days worth of online material, how could we not do a cat class?

Next, Dave is secretly building a grappling kata. I mean, not really, it’s no secret, he’s connecting a series of grappling moves into a sequence… AKA a kata. As he said, what else can you do when you’ve got no partners? Picture it and train it. Go watch grappling class.

Then, Mabel and I built the perfect (not purrfect) CrossFit class. Skill work consisted of cartwheels, shrimp squats (new thing), and hollow holds.

Finally, I did the final moves in Mo Yee Do and committed it to video. Yay! Probably tomorrow I’ll do a video of the whole thing in one take so that people have that as a reference and then we’ll look at some specific themes that can apply to the form.

Day 59: Future Classes

May 12th, 2020

At some point, we’ll open again for regular classes. I’m not going to bother speculating when that will be, but I am going to bother to speculate on what that will look like. It will look like small classes that folks have to sign up for in advance. We’ll have giant squares marking the floor off so that people get their own space. And for the martial arts folks, there will be no contact at first. Anyway, I’m talking out loud. Just wanted to let you guys know that plans are being planned.

I’ve been doing the programming for Dug’s striking class these nine weeks and today I threw some three strike combinations at him. Go check it out and see how it went.

Ever thought about how the stance you take in sparring dictates the options you have? It’s true! All this week we are exploring different stances in kid’s class and seeing what kind of different options they present. Today was all about the lead. Check it out.

CrossFit? Yeah, we do that. It’s become mostly bodyweight movements because I don’t know what kind of gear folks have at home. Today’s skills were the monkey, frog stand, and big toe pose. I won’t tell you what the workout is, because that’s cheating but you can go watch it here.

Kata? Yes. I’m still on the Mo Yee Do kick. Here is part 6. So close to being done.

Day 56-58: Striking

May 11th, 2020

I didn’t make a post over the weekend. So here is the mighty aggregating post for three days!

Mabel and I made a forth video in our “how to do BJJ with your kids” series.

Lara and I did a striking class on how to bridge the gap. We covered the idea of using movement and the idea of using fakes to get in close enough to strike at your partner.

Today’s kid’s class was tigers. That is all. Tigers. Watch it, you’ll see.

For the CrossFit workout today, we worked the bridge, the kB windmill, and the pirouette for skills. Plus there was a minute of burpees in there somewhere.

And last, but not least, the Mo Yee Do series continues with part 6. Getting close to the end of going over just the moves.

Day 55: Changing Styles

May 9th, 2020

I thought I’d change the style of the aggregating posts. Instead of embedding stuff, I thought I’d just share links instead. Hopefully, if I continue with this format, I’ll have something pithy and clever to say at the beginning of the post that fills everyone with hope and joy but for now I just have this paragraph… whatever it is.

CrossFit class – in which I finally figure out that if you stretch your other arm out, you can use it as a counter balance. More evidence as to why I favor the tortoise in the race against the hare.

Here’s the kid’s class – in which I tackle a stuffed penguin and punch into the air. It’s not that I don’t like teaching to a camera – it’s that I fear it may be unsafe for my sanity. 🙂

Here’s the internal martial arts class. It’s all about observation… because if you can’t tell what’s going on, how can you do anything about it?

Here’s part 5 of the Mo Yee Do video series I’m doing. This video covers the “elbow” section. It has 6 moves, so it’s a bit of a doozy and on top of that, the second side ends slightly differently from the first. Breathe deep. You got this.

Day 54: Wheels on the Cart

May 7th, 2020

The wheels on the cart go round and round… you know the tune. One of today’s CrossFit skills was a cartwheel. The rest? It’s a secret.

Knee kicks? Heck yeah we got knee kicks. Check the striking class with Dug.

Switch kicks! What’s a switch kick? Watch the kid’s class and find out… that’s what it is.
