Today in kids class and adult class we worked the same sequence – a double leg take down, to cross body, to north south and finally to the gift wrap. The end goal of the sequence, a gift wrap, is not a submission – it is instead a very uncomfortable way of holding your partner down.
The idea behind teaching this sequence was to give the students a wider range of takedowns to pull from and to offer them a way of holding their partner down that relies on immobilization rather than breaking a joint (a lock of some kind) or shutting off the blood (a choke of some kind).
Wouldn’t it be cool to solve martial problems by tying up your partner like a pretzel and then gently suggesting to them that they need to stop?
