Day 54: Arm Drags and Russian Ties

May 7th, 2020

Today in grappling class, Dave looked at the arm drag and the Russian tie. When do you use one versus the other? Watch and you will see!

And kid’s class? Yeah. We pretended to be fish. Sail fish and puffer fish.

For today’s CrossFit class, I thought I’d combine three of the most difficult gymnastic skills together. Handstand, L-sit, and pistol. Yikes

Kata? Yeah! Mo Yee Do continues! Collect all the moves.

Striking combos? Yes! I’m still on a boxing kick. I mean a boxing punch?

Favorite boxing combos: duck, hook, uppercut, jab.

Day 53: A hard workout

May 5th, 2020

Mabel said yesterday’s CrossFit workout was too easy… so today, we made it harder. They both felt plenty difficult to me, although – to be honest – this one was pretty nasty.

I spent a great deal of time crushing a pillow in kid’s class. We’ll say we worked on top position in grappling, because that sounds better than saying we crushed a pillow. I mean, it was super fun pillow crushing.

Dug threw some fantabulous side kicks today in striking class. Are you kicking enough during this pandemic? Probably not. Go take his class and kick more.

And finally… I made another video in the Mo Yee Do series. A couple students said they’re forgetting the form. Hope this helps!

Day 52: An Easy Workout?

May 4th, 2020

Mabel said the CrossFit workout today was easy. You try it. See what you think.

Shovel hooks and side break falls! That is what kid’s class was. Try it, try it, you will see.

Wanting more striking combos? Your wish is answered.

Favorite boxing combos: jab + cross + shovel hook

Day 50 & 51: A New Series, An Old Series!

May 3rd, 2020

Well, my live video on Saturday was garbage. I couldn’t find wifi so I used cellular instead and wow.. that was some terrible streaming. So it goes.

The good news is that it made me want to do an additional striking video, and the more I thought about it, I thought: “it’s time to do a series on striking!” So yeah, here’s the first video in a striking series. The subject? My favorite boxing combinations. The first one is a jab + lead hook.

Favorite boxing combos: jab + lead hook

Also, Mabel and I made the 3rd installment of our “How to do BJJ with your kid’s” video. In this installment, we explore the mighty guillotine.

Day 49: Our Slogans

May 1st, 2020

We’ve got two slogans. D.I.D. (Do it Daily) and A.B.T. (Always be Training). Today, in the internal martial arts class, Jaydra shared how you can sneak your martial arts training into everyday postures. So, I’m pretty sure that falls under the always be training rubric.

For kid’s class, we worked the flashiest kick of them all, the crescent kick. I mean, maybe there are flashier kicks, but they all involve spinning and jumping. So crescent kicks it was!

For the CrossFit class, we ventured into the deadly world of handstand walking. Turns out, I’ve got a long way to go because my spine turns into the letter C when I handstand walk. The journey never ends.

And now the kata you’ve been dreaming of! The tension and relaxation that never ends! The inhale and exhale of life! The exciting conclusion of two weeks of Mo Yut Do work… Wearing a backpack full of books and doing the form! It’s a fabulous way to make the idea of grounding palpable. Forget metaphors, wear some weight. You’ll get it.
