I’m really happy that the kids are able to hold pads for one another. For one thing, it means they get to hit stuff with their punches. For another, it represents a huge gain in my ability to trust the students. When I first started teaching kids classes I was horrified of letting them hold pads for one another – I thought for sure it would result in injury or a free for all of people chucking pads at one another’s faces.
So much of learning (aka teaching) is about relaxing. Can you relax and trust the students to hold their own pads? Yes? Fabulous. Look, nobody got hurt, no pads got thrown and they are able to learn all the wonderful lessons that actually hitting a pad can bestow.
Now, what’s next in line to let go of?
