There are many lessons to be taken from yesterday’s kid’s tournament. By it’s very nature, a tournament should show us what we are doing well as teachers and what we are leaving out. It is the playing out of technique and strategy against a live environment. One of the big problems I noticed in the grappling divisions was that very few students used their legs when passing the guard. They would push open a closed guard with their arms and then get stuck and not know what to do next.
So today in grappling class, we examined this issue by using our feet, shins and knees to pass the guard. Simple, right? We’ll see in six months (at the next tournament) if things look any different.
