The kids at Westside Academy of Kung Fu have come to expect conditioning at the end of every class. Burpees, squats, jumping jacks, sit ups, broad jumps, running and whatever else we can think of that day.
For today, however, it was a simple balance drill. You get two minutes. Lift one leg up into a crane stance and rest a focus pad on that thigh. If the pad falls or you touch it with a hand, give yourself a point and switch legs. The object of the game is to score as few points as possible over the course of the two minutes.
Was it a hard workout? Not in the sense of working up a sweat, but in the sense of challenging, yes. Not every workout needs to leave us out of breath and drenched. Do students need good balance to practice Kung Fu? Absolutely. With good balance comes good kicks and the ability to defend against being thrown. Plus, it’s fun. Grab a pad and see what your score is.
