It’s our third year at Lewis Elementary and both enrollment and funding are solid. We’ve got 30 students and a grant from a local business. The grant creates an opportunity to both offer low cost martial arts to the students of a Title I school (we’re charging $10 a trimester) and pay ourselves a decent wage. We could get away with charging the students nothing, but it’s our opinion that having the families contribute something nominal makes them feel like they’re supporting something functional instead of getting a free ride.
But enough about money! Let’s talk student base.
As of Thursday, about 30 kids were signed up for Kung Fu Club. The spread of enrollment is much more diverse than in years past. We’ve got 2nd-5th graders where before there were only 2nd and 3rd graders. About 10 kids have returned from last year, as opposed to the previous year when we had only 2 students return. Between having a group of older kids and getting so many returning students the program promises to be better than ever.
