The guard position presents numerous submission opportunities. One is the
guillotine, another is the
kimura. Knowledge of both these submissions will help you to get
one of them to stick. If your partner knows you’re going for the guillotine, they’re more able to defend against it – ditto for the kimura – but if they’re unsure if your going to do one or the other, or if you
switch between one and the other then you’ve got a much greater chance at success.
On top of that, if you know how to do the same two submissions but from different positions (kimura from
cross body, guillotine from
mount) then you
again increase your chances of success because when your partner offers resistance, you may find that positions change. This should be no problem… so long as your familiar with how to apply the submission from the new position.
Having a couple of tools (submissions) that you are able to switch between easily and apply in different positions is better than having a dozen tools (submissions) that you have difficulty connecting and can only apply in certain circumstances.
