I’ve now several times for BJJ class come in with a bunch of material and then, upon starting to teach to actual students, scaled down and only taught half of what I had in mind. This isn’t a bad thing at all. I’d rather have students get one technique down well than have them fail to understand two techniques.
This situation also speaks to the complexities of learning new techniques. There is often SO MUCH going on in a BJJ technique. Which way do you turn? Where do you put your arm? Which hand goes where? Is your hip on the ground or off the ground? You get the idea. There are tons of details involved in understanding the fundamentals and above and beyond that there is a whole hornets nest of “what ifs” that crop up in terms of the reactions of your partner. Forget the what ifs. Just learn the technique first. The what ifs will come up in the live roll and you will figure them out over time.
Tody, we learned the triangle choke. Everyone who grapples should know this technique. It is huge. Back when the UFC started it seemed like every other submission was a triangle. Now that MMA fighters are a little more hip to the move, it happens less often but that doesn’t devalue it one bit. Watch the video above for a basic intro to the triangle. Roll with a partner to glean the details.
