The Truth

Through drills to sparring

The fighting principle “five primary techniques” is all about core competency. What are you good at? What works for you? It seems like the kind of thing that people would know but surprisingly, people are often wrong about what they do well.

People tend to focus on what they aren’t good at and/or what they are currently working on. So to really evaluate ourselves today, I asked the students 4 times during sparring class to write down their 5 primary techniques that scored them points in tournament sparring.

We ran through several different drills to try and get at what we “really” did but for the last 30 minutes of class when we just sparred, the truth was revealed.

It is important to know what you are good at so that you can build your game. If you have no idea what you do well, it is hard to formulate how you should move forward. Know your core competency. Scaffold from there.
