Work vs. Hard Work

What is the difference between work and hard work?

That was a question I got yesterday after class. My answer was that if you do work (not hard work) you are staying within your comfort zone, using the skills you already have, doing the things you have done before. It is not necessarily easy but there is no need for adaptation on your part.

If you are doing hard work, you are putting yourself into places that you haven’t gone before. This doesn’t necessarily mean you are going WAY out on a limb, it can be something just slightly out of your competency, it simply means you are challenging yourself.

Hard work is progress. Work is maintenance.
