Teaching, for me, is somewhat of an exposition of my own martial issues – I teach what I myself am working on. Perhaps this is inevitable as any martial artist is working on all aspects of the art because none are perfectible, only improvable.
With that in mind, today in kid’s class we worked throwing a follow up punch after a kick. I am a kicker in sparring – it’s no secret. Often, when someone scores on me, it is when I leave a pause after my kicks in sparring. I kick, they evade or block and then follow up with their own counter strike. This problem can be addressed by throwing a punch immediately after kicking.
Hopefully, teaching the idea helps the students avoid the same error I am making (leaving an opening after kicking) as well as helps me solve my own problems.
