Everybody knows the armbar. Okay, not everybody, but practically everybody. Heck, there’s probably even a brand of clothing out there called ARMBAR (if not, there’s your new company… go!) out there already.
And well that everyone who grapples should know the armbar. It is a solid, super functional submission that once understood helps students to understand how hinge joints (elbow, knee) work. However, when working with someone close to your own skill level, it’s best to know at least one other way to manipulate the arm to gain a submission.
The reason for this is if your partner is close to your skill level, they’ll probably sniff out your attempt to get an armbar and then they’ll fight you for it and it’ll get messy and tiring. So, what are you gonna do when that armbar is just too much darn work to finish?
Thus today’s grappling class was a brief exploration of a few other options around arm submissions that weren’t the armbar.
