The world of submission grappling is filled with lots of really cool sounding moves. Take, for example, the Peruvian Necktie or the Ninja Choke. Cool names and no doubt very functional finishers for many people.
The trouble comes (I think) when we try to learn too many moves too early. Being a beginner in grappling can be frustrating because it’s hard to see where to fit in the submissions that you know. Add in a few more dozen options and… well… it’s still really hard to see where to fit the submissions that you know.
Instead of branching out – learn a few moves well. Take your time with them and find out where they fit. Then, once you’ve got a couple of moves that work well for you, see if you can branch out from there.
