Kicking for Lewis Kung Fu club. Wait. What is the Lewis Kung Fu club?
Lewis Kung Fu club is a Kung Fu program that runs out of Lewis Elementary school in the SW Portland Woodstock neighborhood. It meets twice a week, after school from 3-4PM. The program costs kids $20 a semester to attend…. super inexpensive for a high quality martial arts program.
Okay. Why are the kids kicking for them?
The program is offered at such a low price because Lewis is a title one school (that means at least 40% of the students come from low income families). The hope is that any student who wants to try the program can – regardless of funds. (It works, by the way, the program gets about 50 students a semester and has been running for 6 years now.) So this is our way of helping out.
Fine. How does kicking raise money?
Well, the students go around and solicit donors. They ask people to donate an amount per kick or a flat amount. So if a student gets a donor to commit a penny per kick and they throw 200 kicks, that donor gives 2 dollars to the Lewis Kung Fu program.
Great. Where does the money go?
The money goes to pay the instructor – Sifu Sean Kelly. He ran the Lewis Program this year for free. We’re raising money to give him a financial thank you.
Cool. What can I do to support the future of the Lewis Kung Fu club?
Grab one of the kids after class and ask them if you can help support their Kick-a-Thon efforts. If you can’t find one, ask me and I’ll force one of the kids to accept your donation.
