I can still recall the first time I saw an MMA fight in which one of the fighters was standing up and the other was on his back, with his legs in the air. I thought for sure things were done, that the standing guy would have no trouble at all winning the fight from there.
But in fact he did have trouble. He had trouble doing anything. He tried walking around, but the other fighter just spun and followed him. He tried kicking, but the other fighter took the shots to the legs and seemed pretty unphased. Finally, he dove in… straight into the guard and it became a grappling match.
Today in class we worked a couple of standing passes that hopefully will end the top player in a dominant position (as in NOT inside the other player’s guard). Thanks, as always, to the guys at Alive MMA for the course material.
