There are many realizations that happen to a student as they learn to grapple. One of the first things most students notice is that being on bottom is miserable and they’d really like to not be there.
One way to not be on the receiving end of cross body, head and arm or the mount position is to learn how to hold those top positions. The approach goes something like this: if you know what it takes to hold a top position, it will help you understand the gaps that may exist in another student’s ability to hold that very same position. Hopefully, when you see those gaps you can manage some kind of a reversal but even if you can’t, know that the first step is simply to see them. Seeing the opportunity is one step above being on the bottom and not having any idea what to do.
