To evaluate the effectiveness of a system, you must first examine what the goals of that system are. For example, one of the goals of CrossFit is to increase the 10 physical skills. One of those physical skills is strength. Therefore, to see if (this particular goal of) CrossFit is succeeding, we should periodically check and see if our strength is increasing.
Enter CrossFit Total, a workout that is 3 power lifts that measure an athlete’s strength. It’s simple. Look at your numbers from last time and compare them to this time. If they are bigger, you got stronger. If you found that one particular lift stagnated (maybe shoulder press, for example) then perhaps you should shoulder press more often, maybe even take a wider angle on strengthening the upper body – bench press, shoulder press, turkish get ups, etc.
