Not too much sitting goes on during Kung Fu but from time to time we do sit and watch each other do forms. The reasoning is twofold. One, it helps the person doing forms get more comfortable with being watched. Two, it gives the person sitting an opportunity to watch their fellow students move.
Ultimately, we’d like to move in a flawless martial way but until such time arrives, it’s reassuring to know that everyone else who trains is as human as we are – imperfect but making progress. Students who get too preoccupied with only watching their teacher can get discouraged by the gap between the way their teacher moves and the way they move. Having a peer group to relate to martially is as important as having a peer group to relate to socially.
We’ve got a kid’s tournament coming up this Saturday! 9AM at the Academy of Kung Fu on 21st and Powell. It’s open to all students in kid’s classes. The cost is $5. There will be forms, grappling and sparring. Students can compete in one, two or all three events. Those who do not wish to compete are encouraged to watch.
