Wouldn’t it be nice to have one more limb to help you secure a joint lock? Wouldn’t it be even cooler if you could take away one of your partner’s limbs when trying to get a submission?
While most of us haven’t gone the limb grafting route yet and are unwilling (or unable) to saw off one of our opponent’s arms, we can still bring truth to these seemingly absurd questions.
When applying the key lock, why not use your head as an extra limb? Secure your partner’s arm tight with both your arms but then to make sure they don’t squirm around, press your head down on their triceps. This will pin their arm between your skull and your forearm. Voila – an extra limb.
As for taking away a limb while trying to apply the key lock, simply slide towards your partner’s head while in the cross body. Keep going until you push their other (not the one you’re trying to make them tap out with) arm up against their head. While this doesn’t actually remove their arm, it does make it mostly useless. If you want to make things even more horrible for them, you can switch your legs and pin that arm between your legs. With that deadly stroke, their arm becomes completely useless.

Alive MMA call this one a “pomission” or submission by superior position. It seems like a fitting end to our theme of the week – position. The submission grappling game, after all, is all about finding a position so superior that your partner has no option but to tap.
