Dimensionally Yours

There are only a few submissions out there but endless ways to apply them.
Think of it this way: you can draw a circle on a piece of paper.  That’s easy, right?  There’s only one way to draw a circle.  What if you pushed down on that circle, drawing half of it “up” towards you (away from the paper) and half of it “down” away from you (deeper into the paper).  Yeah, you’d be dealing with three dimensions.  For more on this broad geometric metaphor, go read Flatland.
What’s this got to do with Kung Fu and grappling?  Well, just because we learn a submission at a particular angle (for example, the calf strangle on the ground) doesn’t mean we can’t make it work from countless other angles (for instance, the calf strangle standing up, as in the picture).  The hard part is putting in the practice time to be able to see the submissions from new angles.  Give yourself time.  Just today Jeremy got a triangle choke from an angle that was (to say the least) odd.  It happens.  Patience and practice pay off.
