Remember when your football coach told you not to hit with the top of your head when you tackled someone? He’s sad if you don’t but here I am to remind you – keep your head up when you grapple because if you let the head come in line with your spine (that naughty spearing position your coach warned you about) then you’re liable to get choked.
Feel that choke coming? Bull the neck up. If your partner gets that arm around the back of your neck, it’s trouble. The drill to work this is simple: get in your partner’s guard, have them try and put you in a
guillotine and resist by bulling your neck. Make them alternate between their left and right hands. Once you’ve had your fill, return the favor and try and choke out your partner – giving them the opportunity to practice bulling their neck. Your football coach would be proud.
