When you’re sparring with someone who has got a fair amount of experience, it’s pretty rare to fire a single shot and have it land. The solution? Combinations. Tonight we worked the double jab and some variations of the idea of the double jab – the double backfist, the jab/backfist, the backfist/hook, etc.
The common thread between all these moves is that it is the same hand striking twice in a row. If you’re partner blocks the first one, hopefully the second one gets in. If they get savvy to the strategy, try throwing a jab followed immediately by a kick – or try switching the order by throwing a kick and a jab. If they get wise to all those tricks, start changing the way you angle in – angle to their weak side as you jab, step straight in, fake step then go in – keep them guessing.
