I’d forgotten about the “hold the cups of water” drill but luckily Professor brought it back to camp this year. The dilemma is simple: students have trouble keeping their hands up when they kick. The solution is equally simple: have students hold cups of water in their hands as they kick.
Why is it bad to drop your hands when you kick? Because the fighter with good timing is going to slip the kick and deliver a counter strike. If you’ve got your hands up you’ve got a decent chance of blocking it. If you don’t, odds are good it will land. In addition, if you’re not aware that you’re dropping your hands when you kick then there is a huge benefit to gaining awareness and body control – then if you choose to drop a hand, you can.
If you missed class today, no problem. Grab yourself some cups of water and kick to your hearts content. Start with the easy kicks like front snap and curl then move to the tricky ones like roundhouse, hook and crescent. If you want to get really crazy, try a few spinning kicks.
