Camp Closing

Today was the last of our 2007 Inservice camps. The theme was compassion. We framed the theme with this idea in terms of helping each other to get better in our training. Are you pushing your partner too hard? Are you not pushing your partner hard enough? Some tell tale signs for being pushed too hard are: closed eyes or a horrified expression. If you’re not pushing you’re partner hard enough, look for: bored expression or a tendency to talk about something unrelated to the drill.

Our guest was Heidi Vorst, who was awesome. She taught us three different folk dances and we played a cool stick game. I’m always super impressed when a dance teacher can keep the attention of the older boys – that means it’s working. The advantage to having her in the morning was that she got the students when they still all had good focus. The disadvantage was that we didn’t get to squeeze in as many Kung Fu drills as we normally do.

I taught one group of kids club counter #4. Across the board, all the kids under the age of 8 could not get it. Something about the idea of backing away THEN coming back forward into the strike was just too challenging. They had no problem with #1, where you just go straight into it and in fact, most of them were trying the same thing with #4 – going straight into it.

I’m looking forward to the next round of camps for 2008. Hopefully we can get some of the students who have been regularly coming to the camps to sign up for classes.
