Sparring and faking

Suppose, as a teacher, you want to know if your students are understanding the material you are presenting. Let’s say you want to evaluate their understanding using questions.

You could simply ask them: “Do you understand?”
You could ask them to raise their hand if they understand and then call on someone who raises their hand and have them explain the content you’ve been teaching back to you.
Or you could just pick a student and ask them to explain what the class is doing and why. This is cold calling. This is what I’ll be doing this week – to see if the concepts and techniques that I’m teaching are making sense to the students.

Hopefully it will also make people pay more attention so they don’t look clueless when I call on them.
