Every once and a while, after some novel workout format or move, a student will ask me “why did we do that?”
The subtext, I think, is : “that was really hard and different from what we usually do. Isn’t the stuff we normally do hard enough? Why are we doing harder things?”
These questions get at the heart of what people’s goals are for working out. My goal is to see how deep the rabbit hole goes. (What am I capable of, how far can I go?) And I think that attitude is reflected in the programming and the way that I run the gym. If it isn’t, let me be explicit: I’m interested in progress.
Which leads me to one final point: yesterday’s workout left me feeling like I got stomped by an elephant. That’s progress, right?
