We have become increasingly removed from what it is we eat. The Omnivoire’s Dillema: a Natural History of four meals by Michael Pollan is proving to be an inspirational read. Here, Pollan examines industrial food, organic food, the food we forage, and follows these chains from source to final meal.
We know our chicken
Today we attended a volunteer orientation at Oregon Tilth’s Educational Site, JEAN’S Farm. Our solution to being removed from, and having limited control over the process by which our food comes to sit on our plates (along with shopping at the local co-op, and farmer’s markets) has to do with being engaged in the process of planting and harvesting our own food from start to finish! In exchange for 30 hours of volunteer time at this urban oasis, we get to learn more about organic gardening/farming techniques, and can graze as we go [right alongside the gossiping chickens].
