In a lot of longer video games, there are save points. This means if you get to a certain point, you can save the game so that if you die, you’ll start back at the save point rather than all the way at the beginning. Mentally, the challenge often becomes to simply get to the next save point and then you can stop, take a breath and pause before tackling the next part of the game.
While CrossFit is not a video game nor do you often die doing it, there is, I think, something to be gleaned from this idea of a save point. It often happens that a convenient marker in lots of workouts is the end of a movement, the end of a round or the end of a distance (like half a lap). Often we tell ourselves that if we can just get to the end of that one thing, then we can take a moment. It’s not a bad idea.
However, there is often more gas in the tank than you give yourself credit. Try going until you are tired instead of stopping at those save points. You might discover you can do more work than you thought. You might discover that you blow yourself out and are exhausted. You won’t know until you try.
