Forms as Drills

Stances: narrow, wide and standard

Forms are all about moving your body in ways that help you think about body connection. Sometimes the forms put you through good fighting stances – places where your feet are underneath you and it is relatively easy to generate power from. Sometimes forms do the exact opposite – they put you in a crummy place and try to teach you how to be powerful from there.

Whatever the case, the goal is being able to strike from wherever you find yourself. We played with this idea tonight in forms class a bit by doing the form Sil Lum Pai and then imitating some of the stance positions in the form while hitting the bag.

My personal favorite was trying to hit the bag with the band tied tight around my knees. Fun stuff.
