Theme of the week: Pivoting

There are lots of ways to hit hard. One tried and true method is to pivot your feet as you strike.

We practice this style of hitting whenever we use the “one heel up rule”. The rule simply means that if you are striking with your upper body, one of your heels should be off the ground. Used properly, this rule will insure that you have pivoted into the strike, thus garnering a harder hit. Used improperly, it means that you’ve simply lifted the heel of your foot off the ground as you threw a punch – possibly throwing a weaker strike (than if you hadn’t done so).

We’ll be looking at the value of pivoting all week. While it is true of almost everything we do, hitting the bags will be of primary importance this week. Feel the pivot? Now feel that pivot deliver a bigger punch into the bag.
