This kick, in our style, is a straight leg kick. This means there is no chamber and there is no snap – you simply swing your leg through an arc and try and make contact at the highest point of the arc.
The striking surface is the outside edge (pinky side) of the foot, between the middle of the foot and the heel. To hit higher on the foot would mean hitting with a surface (and in a direction) that isn’t as stable.
In the video above, I demonstrate both the outward crescent and the spinning outward crescent. Of all the spinning kicks we do, the footwork for the spinning outward crescent is one of the simpler ones. If you know these kicks but you haven’t been hitting the bag with them, hit the bag. You’ll find that contact (as usual) changes everything.
