Harmony Sparring

doubleWhat is harmony sparring?  It is a drill to develop courage.  For those who aren’t used to having kicks and punches thrown at them, harmony sparring provides a safe drill that allows them to experience kicks and punches coming in at a slow speed with no impact.  For those who aren’t used to throwing kicks and punches at others, it gives them a safe drill to practice striking at another human being but with no actual threat of reprisal.

Harmony sparring is also a drill to develop an awareness of opportunity.  Since you don’t have to worry about getting hit or blocking, you can actively look for where the openings in your partner’s guard are.  Find an open spot and throw a strike at it.

Harmony sparring is also a drill to build creativity.  Since, again – it is a low threat drill, you can try that new kick or punch you learned.  You can experiment with fighting in a different way.

Harmony sparring can be a lot of things but it isn’t competitive.  You might say that it is a developmental drill for sparring – a place to be slightly more analytical and experimental but a drill to help students become better at sparring.
