The lion, being the hero of the story, moves in angles. The Kung Fu practitioner, being the hero of the story, moves in angles.
When it was first explained to me that the lion moved in diagonals because evil moved in straight lines, I merely though it was kind of cute and neat. Then, 15 years later, (sometimes these things take time to sink in) I finally made the connection. When a straight strike comes in, you should angle off. When you do the lion dance, you should move at angles because good avoids evil by moving in angles.
So however you look at it – as a lion or a hero – angle. Get out of the way of the straight punch by angling off. Get out of the way of evil by stepping off at a diagonal.
