With Every Step

Today we focused on the idea of throwing at least one strike for every step we took.  The purpose behind this was to increase the volume of strikes.  Not that more strikes is always better but considering the theme of the week – constantly seeking targets – more strikes is better, so long as they are going towards targets.
To help students increase volume, we gradually ratcheted up the necessity level.  First, it was throwing strikes against a stationary partner.  Then, against a moving partner who could only throw one strike.  Next, a moving partner who could throw multiple strikes.  Then, two moving partners who could only throw one strike.  We ended with three partners who could throw multiple strikes.  It was awesome to watch just how many punches, kicks, elbows and knees started flying when students were faced with three opponents.
When students then returned to dealing with only one partner, the strikes continued at their previous volume level!  One idea to glean from all this is if you can raise your own necessity level (maybe there are another 10 attackers waiting behind that door, I better take this guy out fast), then you tend to increase the number of strikes you throw – thus doing a better job at constantly seeking targets.
