The coolest part about having kid’s class right before adult class is that I get to steal my own teaching material. If we worked a particular sparring concept in kid’s class, why not go ahead and keep running with the idea in adult class? Maybe the adults will be able to go further with the concept, maybe they’ll be able to do more scenarios and drills around the idea but the starting point and goals can be exactly the same.
Why? Because no matter what a student’s age, the goal is the same – to become a better martial artist. What’s good for the kids is good for the adults – and vice versa. There are limits, of course – the kid’s won’t be doing knife work anytime soon and the adults won’t be playing the troll game but…
If the adults drilled knife disarms then the kid’s class could be about establishing a strong position from the clinch and preventing their partner from striking anymore. If the kid’s class played the game of troll – where you try and avoid getting hit by the padded stick – then the adults could work slipping and evading in boxing.
Luckily, no such adjustments were necessary today – everyone worked variations on guard reversal from both the top and bottom positions.
