Why do regular push ups when you could be doing clapping push ups? For that matter, why walk when you could run? Furthermore, why air squat when you could load up the bar with 200 pounds? Perhaps this is a bit silly but it leads me to a parallel thought…
I recently had a conversation with one of the athletes who has been training for a while. She’s brought a couple of people in who haven’t stuck around… but she has. Why did she make it and they didn’t? According to her, her friends said it was “too hard”.
I prefer the term “challenge”. Our mission is to challenge athletes – to push them past where they are – no matter where they are. That means if they can do 10 push ups in a row, we’d love to see them doing 11. If they can do 10 push ups from their knees, we’d love to see them get one good quality push up from their toes.
Why challenge yourself? There are many reasons but the one that rings the truest for me is while you’ve got the opportunity (as in you’re still breathing), why not take a chance and figure out what you’re capable of? Why not work as hard as you can in the gym so that physical challenges in “real life” are easy? Maybe along the way you’ll even inspire other people to work hard. Think how easy “real life” would be if everyone worked hard, everyone strove for quality, efficiency and fun in everything they did. Mind boggling, isn’t it?
