There’s something satisfying about doing drills while wearing the boxing gloves. They add a certain oomph to things. They free up students to make some contact and feel reasonably safe about it. They make the threat seem much more real than “going one inch away”.
On the flip side, they make your fists into enormous pillows. You can’t grab anything while wearing them. You certainly can’t throw any eyepokes, fish hooks or any other nasty open handed strike.
Despite the drawbacks, they are a fun part of the “spectrum” of training. They create a consequence: “move or get hit” and that consequence inspires action.
Real consequences provide an environment for real learning. Let us continue safely along that path and see where it leads.
