After stumbling upon an MMA clip yesterday in which one fighter knocked out another with a flying knee kick, it seemed appropriate to practice a flying knee kick during class – at least for a bit.
The rest of the class centered on demonstrating power. Since many martial partner drills take place without contact (by necessity for safety), it’s important to be able to convey the possibility of injury but not actually injure one another. How? Spend some time slamming on the pads. Spend time doing drills in the air. Switch back and forth between the two. Check and see if your body mechanic is the same between the two. If it’s not, keep trying until the motion of your strikes looks the same weather you’re hitting the pad or swinging into the air. Then try throwing strikes at a partner without contact. Is your partner glad you didn’t hit them? If so, then you conveyed power without damage. If not, go back to the drill of hitting the pad and swinging into the air. Repeat until you can communicate this idea clearly.
