Basic Lion Dance Stepping

The lion moves in diagonals. Why? Because according to Chinese mythology, evil travels in straight lines… therefore you can dodge evil by moving in diagonals. Sounds a bit like sneaking between raindrops as a kid, right?

The lion moves through two stances – the glass horse (also called bow) and the twisted horse. First through the left, then the right… so it goes on and on till the drums say otherwise. Sound dull? Well, you’ve got to start somewhere, and zig zag is where the lion starts. We can’t be caught by evil while we’re trying to bring in good fortune, now can we?
