The skill involved in small joint manipulation is impressive stuff. Are finger locks achievable in the golden “real life” situation? Yes, but only with tons of practice. Is it worth investing the time? Instead of asking that question, ask yourself this one: How cool is it to be in complete control of someone’s body just by holding on to two of their fingers?
The answer is of course: very cool.
Outside of the cool factor, I think the kind of patience and understanding of how limbs move in 3 dimensional space is part and parcel for practicing Kung Fu. That’s why for Tuesday’s Noon class we practiced part of an 8 lock sequence that involves 2 finger locks. For the kids, we just kept things to a “simple” arm bar (and by simple I mean it took 45 minutes to get them through it and even still only about 2/3 of them got it).
