Jump!

For all the classes so far this week, it’s been broad jump and high jump practice. I think my favorite part about teaching kids to jump is asking them “Now why are we doing this in a martial arts class?”

Their answers are always “In case someone tries to sweep you out, you can jump over it.” Or, the much more imaginative answers like “If your enemy, like – rolled a chair at you, then you could leap over it an then get close enough to attack them.” It’s answers like these that let me know that Kung Fu movies are still out there, continuing to supply children with the spark to study martial arts.

Today for Lewis, as a celebration of all the “jumpery”, the conditioning was standing broad jump burpees mixed with high jump burpees. The object was to see if they could make two laps across the gym in under ten minutes. Most of the class finished.
