Looking down the list of tournament games we play, nowhere on that list does chi-sao appear. Can you “play” chi-sao for points? Tonight, we gave it a try. The rules went something like this:
– If you off balance your partner, you get 1 point.
– If you get dominant position (side, back, arm jammed across their body) on your partner, you get a point.
– If you off balance your partner and get a dominant position, you get 1 point.
We played this for about 50 minutes of sparring class, and then for the last 10 minutes, tossed in strikes. This added only one more rule:
– If you deliver a well targeted, solid strike, you get 1 point.
Was it worth turning chi-sao into a scored game? I think so. Often when I do chi-sao, I get a little too relaxed about what I’m willing to let my partner do. The point system gave me a more definable objective than I usually have when doing chi-sao.
