Well, while we’re sharing about our “process” and “inspirations” for class activities with kids….
Every time I crossed paths with Wally during our “first-Advanced Class-of-the year-school-cleanup” early yesterday morning [because the expectation was that we would stretch out while cleaning] he would announce to me, “I’m doing mini-squats!” Now, picture if you may, a grown man standing atop a folding chair, staring down at you, smilingly engaged in short, mocking, bursts of curtsy-like knee bends.
After working in the school library today at Buckman Elementary, I hopped in the car and shot over to Lewis Elementary to assist with Kung Fu Club. On entering the gymnasium, the first thing I noticed was that we had two new students (we are working to try and squeeze in a few more students this semester). The next thing I noticed was that Wally was running students through their basic techniques ~ alternately mini and maxi techniques!
My very favorite part about working with young children is the laughs. While I experienced great joy in monitoring Kindergarten recess earlier today, the sight of those Kung Fu Club kids laughing themselves silly as they powered out their mini-kicks somehow managed to top all!
Lastly, I should add that we all discussed the practicality of being able to deliver a powerful technique from a short distance. We agreed also, that there is great benefit in learning to work with an injury by modifying movements to avoid further damage to one’s body. And oh yes, there’s always the benefit of laughter to consider:)
