Drills lead to throws

We’ve got a list of basics for each rank. Yes, they are important but more important is the goal toward which they aim – creating well rounded martial artists who have a solid grounding in self defense.

That means with every drill, every form and every basic we have to make sure that it somehow ties back into improving our self defense skill set.

Tonight we did lots of tripping, sweeping and throwing drills. What could be more practical than being able to toss an assailant on the ground? (Avoiding the conflict altogether comes to mind.)

The video above shows our two introductory throwing drills: pummeling and the arm drag. It also shows some simple throws that dovetail nicely into those drills.
